Specialising in musical ‘accident and insurgency’, bassist Arnie Somogyi’s critically-acclaimed band combines high energy inventiveness with compelling, lyrical ideas. Following his celebrated commission at Cheltenham in 2004 and rave reviews from performances at London’s Ronnie Scott’s, the band joined us with their latest music and a very special guest - American jazz luminary and sparky sideman to the likes of Herbie Hancock and Art Blakey, trumpeter Eddie Henderson.
Press reviews and comments
“A modern jazz outfit delivering tightly argued arrangements over full harmonies and funky beats… and they are remarkably good at it.”
The Financial Times
“When Somogyi launched Ambulance he threatened the band would produce ‘accident and insurgency’, and coupled with Henderson – the sparky catalyst of many a world-class group from Herbie Hancock to the Mingus Band – he delivered in style.”

Press reviews from Arnie's 2007 Cheltenham Jazz Festival concert
"As no-nonsense dispensers of vigorous, lively and wholly enjoyable jazz, Arnie Somogyi's various bands are hard to beat and in Eddie Henderson he's found a kindred spirit."

What makes Arnie Somogyi part of our Jerwood Jazz Generation
“About a year and a half ago, Arnie was given a residency at Aldeburgh to spend time away from gigging and teaching in order to develop some new material for a new group called Ambulance. Arnie always puts together great bands and when he mentioned that the fine American trumpeter Eddie Henderson was to be part of the touring band, I saw this as very much a Cheltenham project. One of our great successes has been the setting up of projects in which musicians from the US play in a British led group.”

Where you’ve seen him before
Arnie wrote the 2004 Jerwood Commission for his acclaimed Anglo-Hungarian band, Improvokation.
Latest news
Arnie will be playing and touring over the summer with a number of different bands, which include performances at the 606 Club in London.
