A seasoned world traveller and free spirit, Jonny Phillips brought lyrical world music and a jazz spontaneity to Cheltenham.

Blending the musical, folkloric and dance traditions of North Brazil, West Africa, the middle east and beyond, Jonny's beguiling, cinematic songs have been hailed by critics as "gentle beautiful music that is surprisingly affecting" (Time Out). For his Cheltenham gig, he was joined by some of London's finest young musicians, including one of last year's Jerwood Rising Stars, the saxophonist Ingrid Laubrock, and Mercury Prize nominee, drummer Seb Rochford.

Comments and reviews of Jonny Phillips' Oriole:

"Cinematic folkish lullabies exploring the cultural pathways between West Africa, Brazil and Europe."

Time Out

"Oriole proves how open minded young British-based improvisers are these days."

Jazzwise

"Jonny's band Oriole is part of the F-IRE Collective. What impressed me was the mixture of jazz with Latin rhythms, especially the Brazilian material which captures the gentle sensuality of that music very effectively."
