Fraud
James Allsopp - reeds, decomposer Tim Giles - electric percussion, composer Philip Hochstrate - keyboards Stian Westerhus - guitar Ben Reynolds - drums
Fraud – in their own words, not ours! – combine ruthlessly trimmed funk with a slaughterhouse approach to improvisation.
Their colourful, intrepid music was the brainchild of James Allsopp, a Perrier Jazz Award winner; and Tim Giles, a collaborator of, amongst others, Stan Sulzmann and Richard Fairhurst. Intensely spontaneous, this concert was a high energy fusion of contemporary jazz, electronica, Norwegian rock and much more and kicked off the weekend's music with a sizeable bang.
Fraud also appeared as part of the live broadcast from the Festival of BBC Radio 3's Jazz On 3.
Comments and reviews from Fraud's Cheltenham Jazz Festival 2006 performance:
"Saturday dawned to a wake up call of apocalyptic proportions courtesy of Fraud. Led by saxophonist James Allsopp and drummer Tim Giles, their organic mix of electronics and morphing percussion created a cavalcade of lopsided grooves and skewed melodies, Allsopp throwing a death-metal salute during a fevered axe-melting spot from guitarist Stian Westerhus on the solo of the weekend."
Jazzwise "James Allsopp's playing has impressed me immensely in two groups: Richard Fairhurst's Nest, a former Jerwood Rising Stars band; and in Graham Collier's Jazz Ensemble in Birmingham and the London Jazz Festival in 2004. In this new band, Fraud, he works with another young star, percussionist Tim Giles."
